First Week of School

Posted on 09/06/202609/06/2026 by Mark

Last Wednesday and Thursday were the first two days of school for my 5th grader. He goes back on Tuesday. Start easy! I like that!

It was funny because last Tuesday, Niko was craving a cheeseburger and wanted me to take him to a local nearby restaurant for it. First, I was working, and second, I was like no, we are relaxing today and need to be primed and ready for the first day of school tomorrow. So, I said maybe Friday or Saturday or Sunday, we can satisfy your cheeseburger craving. I even threw in a restaurant in St. Cloud called Val’s that supposedly has really good burgers.

Well, Friday came along, and Niko had absolutely no interest in going out. Guess the first two days of school, along with early wake ups wore him out.

On Saturday, as I was walking, Nina texted me to inform Niko wanted to go to Val’s at noon. Fine with me. I got home around 10:30, and waited patiently for him. At noon, he was ready to go. But, we had a small issue and that issue was his iPad. I didn’t want him taking it with him. He was frustrated with me, and I didn’t back down. I let it go, and ate some spaghetti and meat sauce at home. Finally, around 2:00, I told Niko, I am leaving. I was sure he heard me, because after I backed out and was in the driveway, he came out. At first, he was planning on checking the mail and then go back inside. But, he was curious as to where I was going. I unlocked the door, and miraculously, he got in. No iPad! I closed the garage door, and took off for Val’s. I told Niko to text Nina to let hew know I got him and we going for lunch!

Niko was super happy and it was nice to have him without his iPad. On the way, he was looking at videos on my phone about Val’s. Hey dad, I don’t think they have a place to eat. I think it’s only take out. I was like, that is fine, we can get our food and eat at McDonalds or Wendy’s down the street (I was joking, but he thought I was serious).

When we arrived, I didn’t expect the kitchen and ordering area to be as big as our kitchen at home! Thankfully, a nice gentleman who was waiting pointed us to a self serve kiosk for ordering.

So, how was the burger and fried and shake?

Our bacon double cheeseburgers were OK (I have had better). The fries were really outstanding. I am assuming the shake was good as Niko drank it all (I just got a teeny sip). Will we go back? Probably not. There are some many other restaurants we want to try.

On the way home, I stopped at a Dollar General store a few miles from us, and let Niko get some Prime drinks, a slinky, and chips.
