I got this book from Netgalley so I can read and review it before it’s published. I knew D.L. as a comic, but nothing else about his background. It’s amazing that he survived being in a gang in L.A and not having supportive parents and became one of the top comics in the country.
He was afraid of his mother, and would often hide in his closet. His dad was man of a very few words. His dad, also wasn’t his biological dad, and many many years later when D.L. and his real dad met, D.L. wanted no part of it.
He had some very supportive family members who took him in, and treated him like a person.
Of course, he talked about how got his start in comedy, basically, he was riffing on things in a local barbershop. He talked about his success and failures throughout his career (TV shows and The Original Kings of Comedy). He also talked about being a comic on the road Friday through Sunday, and then holding down a “real” job during the week.
He talked about how he met his wife and his children.
Overall, I enjoyed it and it was a quick read for me.
