I only have a few books remaining in the series, and so far, this one has been my favorite. McKenzie gets shot and he tells the story of what went down and who did what (after the fact). When I got to chapter 18, I knew what was going to happen, but how it all went down, I was way off.
Basically, we have three teams trying to help solve the “who did it.”
- We got Chopper and Herzog, two former criminals, who in the past have helped McKenzie. McKenzie also saved Choppers life. They could both easily have their own series!
- We got Private Investigator Greg Schroeder and FBI agent Brian Wilson. McKenzie calls Wilson Harry as he reminds him of Harry Dean Stanton, and Schroeder has worked with, for, and against McKenzie. We got Riley Muehlenhaus (also more known as Riley Brodin-Mulally) who has hired PI Schroeder to help find out who shot McKenzie. McKenzie saved Riley’s life in a prior book.
- We got Commander Bobby Dunston, McKenzie’s best friend, and current St. Paul police officer. We also got Bobby’s former partner, Jean Shipman, who is also a St. Paul police officer. Also helping are Bobby’s wife Shelby and a former acquaintance of McKenzie, Heavenly Petryk.
The teams investigate separately, but at the end, they all end up at the same personal residence of somebody and a hostage situation quickly arises. Who gets the bad person to give up? I won’t say, but I will say, I thoroughly enjoyed the action. I couldn’t stop talking about to my wife and son, and they will listen, but don’t care.
Oh, how can I forget, Nina, McKenzie’s wife (yeah, they got married at the end of the last book, sorry if I spoiled that). Nina punches somebody at her club who is threatening to hurt her just like what happened to McKenzie. PI Schroeder gets three of his employees to watch over Nina.
What was Mckenzie involved in? A friend of his had his DNA tested so he could learn more about his family, and the DNA results told him, his father was likely somebody else. So, he got McKenzie to help find the truth, which he did.
