I actually started this book, and stopped about halfway through as it wasn’t resonating with me. I tried some other series, and they also didn’t resonate with me. I can usually tell quickly. But, a few days ago, I came back to this one, and finished it.
I recently read all the Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers books by John Sandford. Lucas and Virgil are MN police officers (well, Lucas ends up as a US Marshall) later in his books. Well, for this series, both the author and the book location are MN based. We moved to MN last June from Texas. So, it’s fun to sort of know of locations when they are mentioned.
Joe Talbert is a 21 year old student who has an assignment to interview somebody. That somebody happens to be a recently released prisoner, Carl Iverson, who is in a nursing home and has cancer. Obviously, Joe’s assignment is about the murder. Joe dives in and investigates that murder and gets help from his apartment neighbor Lila Nash and police office Max Rupert. Also helping is Joe’s brother, Jeremy who is autistic. Joe’s mom is a drunk and a gambler, and Joe rescues Jeremy quite a few times.
Well, I won’t spoil the ending, but I really enjoyed it and like the characters of Joe, Max, and Lila. The author has several books about Joe, Max, and Boady (who in this one, is an attorney) and I am reading them in order of being published. So, currently reading, The Guise of Another (Max Rupert, #2).
