Sick Child Of Mine

Posted on 02/02/202503/12/2026 by Mark Lieberman

Whatever I had last week, Niko got it, but he got it worse. Whereas I took one day off from work, Friday, January 24th, he was out of school from Wednesday, January 29th through Friday, January 31st.

For me, I was exhausted, had a cough, and a stuffy nose. On Friday, I went to rehab in the morning and when I arrived home, I logged into work and told my boss that I wasn’t feeling well, and logged off. I took a long nap and it was very helpful. On Saturday, I went to CVS to get stronger medicine and Kleenex for myself. By Sunday, I was already much better. I did get some early sleeps those days as I tucked myself in as soon as Niko was sleeping.

For Niko, on Wednesday, he stayed home not because he was sick, but because there was a class field trip to the zoo and that day, it was cold, rainy, and foggy. Plus, Nina was unable to attend as her back is out and I had rehab in the morning and work calls in the afternoon. Niko was feeling ok in the morning, but then something happened and he felt bad (he even had a fever). I never had a fever, poor sick child of mine.

I always so feel bad when he is sick because he looks miserable and doesn’t act like himself. Fortunately, he took medications easily and drank and was able to eat. But, on Friday, as he was lying in bed with Nina, he took a short nap. Napping for him doesn’t happen, so seeing him nap, was a relief and he needed it. We always tell him, meds, drinking, and sleep will help his body recover. Today, he is already feeling much better.

On Thursday, I got Chinese food on the way home from a rehab seminar and normally, Niko would jump at the opportunity to eat noodles with me, but he wasn’t in the mood for noodles yet. He was just resting in his bed, but later, he did have his noodles.

Yesterday, I got him to go out of the house for a quick drive to Subway. Earlier in the day, he told me he was craving Subway. And, I said yes that is fine. He likes the #30 Beast sandwich: pepperoni, ham, salami, roast beef, turkey, and provolone. Add some lettuce and mayo for him and for me, I got the same thing, but I added spinach, peppers, and onions. Oh, he also always gets a bag of chips, cookies, and an orange juice. It’s not my favorite thing to eat, but it’s actually pretty tasty. We got Nina a #0 which is an invisible sandwich with nothing on it! A few weeks ago, the three of went to the same Subway as Niko wanted it for lunch, but that particular day, Nina and I weren’t in the Subway mood, so we drive to a new Pei Wei for us instead!

Every Saturday, a Mister Softee ice cream truck comes to our neighborhood, and even if we don’t want it, it’s always inevitable as not only can we hear the jingle, but all three of us have the Mister Softee app where we can track the truck down until it comes directly in front of our house. Well, Niko was tracking it, and requested a chocolate milkshake as it would help his sore throat. As soon as I heard the jingle, I grabbed my debit card and ran outside just in time to have it stop in front of our house. Yeah, I got the shake for Niko and a Reeses peanut butter Sundae with extra peanuts for Nina and I to share.

One time, I drove to the truck as I tracked it down on the app as we couldn’t wait any longer. Well, when I got back in the car for the super short drive home, Niko’s soaked spilled all over the front passenger seat of my car (there was a just a little bit left). I felt so bad that I ended up giving him some of mine.

There are a few other ice cream trucks that roam the neighborhood. One of them usually appears at the school when the final bell rings, and yes, if Niko sees it, he wants something. The other ice cream truck is driven so fast that by the time I hear it, she is already way past us. Well, one time, Nina and I did catch her and that was our first day in our previous house back in 2019. Niko was at my parents house as we were still moving in. On that hot day, ice cream was a perfect treat.
