Week 1 – Warren VS Churchill

Posted on 09/08/201311/04/2025 by Mark
Last night, I was at Heroes stadium as the Churchill Chargers hosted the Warren Warriors.

Ok, so the Judson Rockets are my “home” team and the Churchill Chargers are my ‘bandwagon” team. The Chargers starting running back is Nico Smisek and his Dad is Kevin Smisek, the head basketball coach at St. Anthony.  I was the St. Anthony Yellow Jackets basketball unofficial beat writer last season.

A few weeks ago, I got an email from a parent of a St. Anthony football and basketball player…she wants me to come to a football game and write about them and I said of course.  I am really looking forward to it…I just gotta look at there schedule and my schedule.  When I do go, I want to experience it as a fan cause that is something I never get to do!!  Hey, I may even attend a Katy High School football game later this season…Texas Bob invited me.

I worked a Warren game in Week 0 in which they exploded for 62 points and had 71 plays for 517 yards.

I know the Chargers return three key offensive players.  Nico is one of them, quarterback Nate Pearson and Mr. do it all everything Dimitri Flowers are the others.  Flowers will be playing at Boise State next year!!!

Let me just say that I didn’t expect a blowout…especially a blowout in favor the the Churchill Chargers. The Churchill Chargers defeated the Warren Warriors by a score of 36 to 10.

The Warren Warriors looked bad on offense and the defense had no answer for Flowers, Smisek, and Pearson.

Warren ran 58 plays for 279 yards.  Running back, Ronald Jacobs was the only player over 100 yards…he had 15 carries for 106 yards and the only touchdown.

The Warriors start District play next week and they can’t afford to have any more games like this.

Churchill ran 60 plays for 425 yards.  Nico Smisek, the running back, had 14 carries for 103 yards and 3 receptions for 31 yards and a touchdown.  Had had several really nice long runs.

Quarterback Nate Pearson was 19 for 23 for 259 yards with 5 touchdowns and one interception.  Nate only had one incomplete pass in the first half!!   Dimitri Flowers had 10 receptions for 183 yards and 4 touchdowns.

The Chargers defense forced 4 turnovers and the offense, well, you see the numbers, looked really sharp.   Man, the Chargers next opponent is the Judson Rockets!!!    OMG, that should be an awesome game!!  Who do I root for in that game?

So, last night at the game, I was doing stats for the Texas Sports Radio Network but there were 3 other people doings stats also…the public address announcer had a stat man, the other radio crew had a stat man, and Blake Hurtik from the Express-News was covering the game.  Now, I could hear the public address announcer and the other radio crews stay guy when they provided numbers and when I looked at my stats, we all had different numbers…but I know mine are the best!!!

I am very glad I have till Wednesday to choose my stat/player of the week cause it is gonna be a touch decision…a decision that can be influenced by bribes!!  I got Nate and Dimitri from last night, I got Judson quarterback, Rayjohn Austin-Ramsey and Judson wide receiver, Andre Wilson from Friday night, and Justin Stockton, the Steele running back from Friday as well.   They all had monster offensive numbers!!

Next Thursday, I will be at Lehnhoff stadium as the Steele Knights host the Kerrville Tivy Antlers. I will be doing double duty as this is a Thursday Night Lights TV game and also a Texas Sports Radio Network game.

On Friday, I am at Heroes stadium as the Churchill Chargers host the Judson Rockets.

And, Saturday is still to be determined!!
