Why do Athlete’s do stupid things?

Posted on 07/01/201211/04/2025 by Mark
1. Because they can!

2. Because they have a lot of money!

3. Because they don’t give a crap about the consequences!

4. Because they think with their balls (no pun intended) (thanks dad for coming up with that one)!

Something stupid can mean saying something mean, writing something mean, using your middle finger as a gesture, throwing a temper tantrum (this happens in baseball a lot; a player will go the dugout and just go bonkers), taunting your opponent, being at the wrong place at the wrong time, carrying a loaded weapon at an airport, being arrested or accused, requesting a trade, participating in an activity that is prohibited in your contract, making up an excuse for an injury, or lying.  I am sure I missed a few more but you get the point.

So, here are a few of my favorite stories of an athlete doing something stupid:

OJ Simpson!  I admit, I was glued to the television as the police were chasing the White Bronco and people were cheering for him on the LA highway’s.

Allen Iverson mentioning the word practice 20 times while talking to the press.

Terrell Owens doing sit-ups topless in his driveway while talking to the press.

On November 29th, 2009, Tiger Woods struck a fire hydrant and tree with his car as he was backing up in his driveway.  His wife (now ex-wife) used a gold club to smash a window and rescue him.  Did I  mention this happened around 2:00 in the morning.  What is so important at that time of day?  Was he going to WalMart?  Was it a booty call?

On April 20th, 2012, Amare Stoudemire had a temper tantrum after a game and punched a glass casing surrounding a fire extinguisher.  Why couldn’t he punch the air? Last week, Amare Stoudemire was fined for a gay slur on Twitter.  Amare, you need some anger management classes.

On June 13, 2012, Tony Parker was in a New York night club and when he left he ended up having emergency surgery on his eye due to a piece of glass hitting his cornea.  The glass was ultimately part of a fight between 2 rappers and a girl.  Tony is now suing the club for $20 million dollars!!!  Tony, I am sure there are plenty of great French restaurants in New York that would have loved your company!

A few weeks ago, David Stern, the Commissioner of the NBA asked Jim Rome, a radio host, “Have you stopped beating your wife yet?”  Come on David Stern; you are the leader of a huge business, think before you say something that stupid.

Lastly, just last night, Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic requested to be traded to the Brooklyn Nets.   If I were the GM, I would say OK, but instead of the Brooklyn Nets, I would trade him to the Marshall Islands Nets for seafood!

The moral of this post is THINK BEFORE YOU DO SOMETHING STUPID!
