Niko has always enjoyed legos, and some of the legos he has were from my childhood. In his younger years, I would have to build any new sets (and, he has a bunch) for him. But, now, he can do them on his own and he rarely needs help. Usually, he calls for me when he can’t find a piece or needs a break, but wants to keep building.
For myself, I enjoy building with him as it’s very calming. I also enjoy grabbing one or two or three or four of our various boxes of legos and just building things with him.
A few weeks ago, we got a Lego City airplane set from the Lego Store (which is close to us at a fancy shopping area and they also have places we like to eat at (Cheesecake Factory, PF Changs, Lucianos, and Kona Grill). The set was $129, and Niko used $30 of his money and we took care of the rest. It was like 900 pieces with not just an airplane, but several vehicles that an airplane would need, and quite a few mini-figs (for work and for traveling). Unfortunately, we had to stop building as it was Sunday night and, my little builder needed to go to sleep. Monday morning, I took all the pieces downstairs and finished building the airplane. I set everything up for a great flight and when Niko came home from school that afternoon, he was super excited to see the finished product and play with it. You know, it is really cool and much bigger than the airplane I built when I was his age!
Last night, he did a stop-motion video of a small Minecraft lego set, and that was pretty amazing. It was like 80 pictures and he was concentrating so hard on it. It was my idea and he setup his iPad in a perfect position to do it.
