The Dad is Watching Television

Posted on 09/10/202304/19/2025 by Mark

I stopped watching television when Niko was born in 2016. I was a frequent watcher of The Simpsons, CSI, Criminal Minds, and The Walking Dead. And to be honest, I don’t miss them, and I don’t care what happened to the characters. I also stopped paying attention to sports (ESPN) and couldn’t even tell you who won the championships in the NFL, NHL, MLB, and NBA. I am enjoying the moments with Nina and Niko.

But, sometimes, if something piques my interest, then I will watch it. And this happens rarely these days. Usually, when I do watch something, I have a very short attention span for it, and it takes a few days to finish. I have other things I enjoy doing in the evenings like reading and writing.

If I am watching something, I don’t want to be up all night to finish it as since school started for Niko last week, we have all had early wake ups, so I like to get to bed early as I don’t know when Niko will be waking up. During the weekday, Niko’s wake up is 6:15 am and on the weekends, it’s whenever he wakes up, which could be anytime! When Niko does wake up in the middle of the night, my first thought is to figure out what time is it so I can plan ahead. I try my best to not turn on any lights and pray that the cat doesn’t say meow 5,000 times to Niko. Most of the time, he goes back to sleep, but if he wakes around 6 am, he is very likely going to be awake. So, when that happens, I tell him we can’t go downstairs for breakfast till at least 7 am or when the sun makes an appearance.

What shows am I watching?

Season two of Winning Time is back on HBO Max or whatever it’s called today and will probably change tomorrow. I have read all the appropriate books by Jeff Pearlman that the series is partially based on. I love John C Reily as Dr. Jerry Buss and Adrian Brody as Pat Riley.

Nina and I have to be mindful when we put something on the television, so for the past few days, it’s been Ugly Betty. Niko and I are distracted by the show and often ask Nina what is happening. The other day, Niko wanted to watch a few minutes of an episode and then he would go to sleep.

I have recently started to read the Jesse Stone books, and when I saw there were movies based on them and Tom Selleck plays Jesse Stone, I decided to watch them and all I can say is the books are much better than the movies (Night Passage and Death in Paradise). I still have quite a few more books to read and movies to watch.
