the dream feed – not to be confused with the new Netflix category

Posted on 06/17/201604/19/2025 by Mark
We are still trying to get Niko into a nighttime routine and are trying lots of things.  One is different ways to fold a blanket for swaddling and another is actual swaddle blankets (we have purchased several to see which works best).  We play white noise all night (a hair dryer or ocean sounds), we always gently rock him in our arms before we lay him down for sleep, and we have read several articles about how to put a crying baby to sleep!!

Something very recent we have tried is a dream feed.  This happens while he is sleeping as I give him a bottle of milk to eat. I always have to be woken up by Nina and that is a challenge because I want no part of waking up, I want to keep on sleeping.  She can’t quite reach me to nudge me so she gently pats my back and in some instances, she tickles me (that always works as I squirm and make a high pitched noise).  I keep thinking it is the baby who is touching me!!!

Eventually, I wake up, grab the bottle from the refrigerator (yes, we have a mini fridge in our bedroom), proceed to the bathroom where I am greeted by Franklin cat, poor some water (not sugar) in the bottle warmer, pee (because I am in the bathroom), wash my hands and face, grab the warm bottle, say goodbye to Franklin, proceed to the bedroom, find the baby’s face in the dark (not really dark as I have my phone flashlight on), put the nipple from the bottle in the baby’s mouth (I haven’t missed yet), and just watch as he sleeps, eats, and makes happy noises.  Afterwards, I put the bottle back in the mini-fridge, make sure I haven’t missed anything in the social media world by frantically refreshing Twitter and Facebook, and go back to sleep (and dream about food).  All this happens around 10 or 11.  Now, I do hear Niko cry for food later (I have no clue what time because I am sleeping), but Nina wakes up and changes his diaper and feeds him.

I always happen to wake up 5 minutes before my alarm goes off!!!   And, I am off again to the bathroom where I have everything I need (clothes included) to make myself presentable for the real world (sweet, an old MTV reference and yes, I used to watch that show).
