My New Co-Workers Are…/Random Daddy Thoughts

Posted on 04/19/202004/19/2025 by Mark

I started working from home on April 8th and my new co-workers, Nina, Niko, and Franklin, are still getting used to me being home. Even though we have a dedicated office where the door can be shut with a 27 inch iMac, I prefer to be in the open with my 15.6 inch laptop. I like my family and they like me! It’s probably the same amount of distractions at home! And, the best thing about working from home is I get have to lunch with my son instead of by myself at my desk while I read a book. The books I have read lately on my iPad have been been autobiographies/biographies of business people.

On Thursday, I will be turning 43 and I am not going to plead to my neighbors to celebrate my birthday in a drive-by car parade! All I am asking for is lots of Chinese food from a local restaurant; if I can get it delivered, that would be great, but I also won’t mind wearing a mask and gloves to pick it up! I am off that day from work and that will be nice. My birthday gift that I will buy for myself is a new HP Windows laptop. Niko will get my Acer Chromebook.

Since March’s Daylight Savings Time, I have been waking Niko up twice a night for pee (he hasn’t had a diaper since that time as well). He did great with only a few wet pajamas and sheets, until a few weeks ago, where it felt that every-time I woke him up, I have to change sheets and pajamas. A few days ago when I woke him up for the first round of pee, he unzipped his pajamas and stood at his doorway and peed on the carpet; he must’ve thought that was the toilet! I don’t know why the change all of a sudden and it’s no biggie as we have extra sheets and lots of pajamas as well as a washing machine. So, to counter that, I am adjusting the times I wake him up to find the perfect times. But, starting on May 1, when I start my 2nd term at WGU for my MBA, I will get Nina to do the first shift and I will get the second shift. Just a quick update, he did great on Friday and Saturday for pee, so I might’ve found the perfect times.

Niko can scream really loud and he shows it when we tell him NO. I hate it when that happens, but at the same time, we have to teach him that we the parents and our words are the final words and he needs to understand that. Sometimes that screaming happens when I wake him up for the first pee and I can’t leave him until he stops and that takes time.

It’s been a strange year so far, especially since Nina had surgery on January 29th and was just about fully recovered by the time the world started shutting down. Nina and Niko have been home for almost 6 weeks. I have only been home for 12 days.

It seems that all Niko wants to do is eat and watch his iPad at home! The first few days, Nina and Niko enjoyed doing activities like watching live videos on Facebook from various places, but that quickly ended for both of them.

Of course, when I take his iPad from him so we can do something else, screaming always happens. Also, getting Niko in the car to go for a drive and get food and drinks is another big screaming fest, he just wants to stay home and eat and watch his iPad.

I can’t wait for stuff to be reopened so we can start having adventures again. I do try to bribe him, but it doesn’t work. Yesterday, I got dressed and tried to get Niko dressed so we could go get food and drinks, but he wanted no part of it. He did tell me what he wanted to eat and drink, but I refused to get him anything unless he came with me; well, he didn’t and nobody got anything. I just drove my car around the block.
