Week 3 – Pflugerville Hendrickson Hawks at Brandeis Broncos

Posted on 09/13/201411/04/2025 by Mark
On Friday night, I was at Farris stadium as the Pflugerville Hendrickson Hawks played the Brandeis Broncos.  Throughout the game, it rained and we even had a 10 minute lightening delay in the 3rd quarter.  They didn’t even do a quick warm-up when play resumed.

You know it’s raining when you see the umbrellas come out from the fans in the stands in unison!  You could also see the rain against the stadium lights!!    There were some die-hard fans who stayed till the bitter end.

The good thing about the rain is, it started just as I was exiting for the stadium and it was a freaking downpour!!!   Obviously, since it it was raining, I didn’t hang any banners, but I did want to grab my IKEA umbrella which was buried deep in my trunk (I got a bunch of bulky COSTCO items in there). Somehow as I grabbed my umbrella, I cut my right hand (on what, I have no clue…I will blame the paper towels) and it was a bleeder!!!  I am OK (in case you’re wondering).  When I got upstairs to the press-box, I tended to it with my car emergency medical kit!!!  Yeah, I have a car emergency medical kit (stop laughing).  I think it needs to be re-stocked!!

Even though we are only in Week 3 of the football season, I have already seen both of the teams play and beat the same team, the Judson Rockets.

In Week 1, Hendrickson defeated Judson 37 to 34.  They ran 62 plays for 354 yards and I came away very impressed with them.  I even mentioned in my BLOG, that I wouldn’t be surprised if they went undefeated again this year.

Brandeis defeated Judson in Week 2 by a score of 27 to 14.  Brandeis forced 7 turnovers on the Rockets and capitalized them into points.  Jaylen Dukes, a running back, had 15 carries for 106 yards and 1 touchdown.  The only bad thing that happened to Brandeis was there starting quarterback and another running back got injured in the game and didn’t return (nor, did they play on Friday).

Coming into the game on Friday night, both teams had 2 wins and 0 losses.  I was totally expecting a very close game and folks, it was indeed close and extremely competitive.  Brandeis defeated Hendrickson by a score of 28 to 21.  Hendrickson had an opportunity to tie the game, but there HAIL MARY PASS was intercepted as time expired.

The Hendrickson Hawks ran 54 plays for 331 yards.  The quarterback combination of Carrington Kearney and Ian Starkey, were 14 of 24 passing for 186 yards with 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Kearney is more of a runner and Ian is more of a passer.  Dude, I would like to see them both in the game at the same time.  Running back, Tazh Maloy, had 11 carries for 58 yards and 1 touchdown. Kearney had 11 carries for 52 yards.  Isaiah Townes, a wide receiver, had 6 receptions for 110 yard and 1 touchdown.   Looking over there total stats, they had 10 penalties for 80 yards and were 1 of 9 on 3rd down conversions with 8 punts.  So, they won’t have an undefeated season, but they could still go undefeated in District 13-6A.

Even though Brandeis won, they were out-gained in total yardage (331 to 250).  Jaylen Dukes, the running back, had 28 carries for 113 yards and 1 touchdown.  Derek Dennard, the quarterback, who replaced starter Paul Lozano last week, had 7 carries for 47 yards and 1 touchdown.   Dennard is a better runner than passer.  Peyton Hall, a wide receiver, was 1 for 1 passing with a 35 yard reverse pass for a touchdown to Cross Mitchell.

I am always impressed with Brandeis and I kinda have a feeling that they will play the Brennan Bears for the District 27-6A championship.  But please don’t tell the O’Connor Panthers cause they will want to get in on the championship action!!!

On Thursday, I will be at Boerne as the Antonian Apaches visit the Boerne Greyhounds.  The Greyhounds quarterback is Quinten Dormady and he has committed to play college ball at University of Tennessee.  I am really looking forward to this game!!

On Friday, I will be at Rutledge stadium as the Brennan Bears visit the Judson Rockets.  Man, this is going to be an awesome game and I can’t wait!!
