Like to Die (Mac McKenzie, #15) – by David Housewright

Posted on 04/01/202604/01/2026 by Mark

I have really been enjoying the Mac McKenzie books, and am devouring them quickly. If you are new to this series, let me tell you McKenzie is a former St. Paul Police Officer and now is an unlicensed Private Investigator. In the first book, he caught a bad guy and there was an insurance claim rewards that he received for about $3 million. Through a smart financial advisor, that has grown to about $5 million. They take place in Minnesota, so the coldness is sometimes a whole book in itself.

For this one, he is investigating someone doing stupid things to try and sabotage a salsa business. Yes, I said salsa! The owner of Salsa Girl Salsa is Erin Peterson, and she is a lot like his girlfriend, Nina. Of course, he figures everything out, but a lot of things do happen to McKenzie.

One of the things I like reading is his inner thoughts and answers to those inner thoughts.

Just how awesome are McKenzie and Nina as a couple? Who would play them on television or on the big screen? That is a tough one. Maybe Scarlett Johansson as Nina. Google AI likes Jon Hamm, Nathan Fillion, and Kyle Chandler as Mac. Ok, I can see Kyle Chandler. And, for Mac’s best friend, Commander Bobby Dunston, I want Jon Bernthal.

Well, here is a direct quote that I also recited to my wife, who is also named Nina:

Mac speaking, “You are the most intelligent, most kind, most beautiful, most most most most most remarkable women I have ever known or heard of. No one else is even on the same continent. You might not believe it, but I do. You know, Nina, talking to you always makes me aware of how great my life is.”
