Demolition Angel – by Robert Crais

Posted on 12/24/202503/27/2026 by Mark Lieberman

I was reading The Last Detective (Elvis Cole, #9) and one of the characters that is helping to investigate a kidnapping is Carol Starkey. I don’t remember how I realized that this book, Demolition Angel, is about her and happens prior to The Last Detective.

Carol is a former bomb squad technician, and after a near death experience with a bomb and an earthquake, she is back as a detective trying to track down a bomb maker named Mr. Red. She smokes, she drinks, she sees a therapist, she is a bit feisty, and yet she is also a very smart detective. There were a few crossover characters (Dolan and Chen). No Cole and Pike, and that was fine with me.

I enjoyed the storyline and her overall tough girl personality, and am glad there are a few more Cole and Pike books with her in it.
