Remarkably Bright Creatures – by Shelby Van Pelt

Posted on 12/08/202512/08/2025 by Mark

Normally, this wouldn’t be a book I would read, but a few days ago I saw that Bill Gates recommended some books and this was one of them. The description intrigued me, so I decided to check it out.

As I was reading it, it reminded me a little bit of the book called, A Man Named Ove by Frederick Bachman. I think it was the tone and the characters.

The book itself is partially narrated by a Giant Pacific Octopus named Marcellus. He is a very smart creature, who understands the world around him at his aquarium home. He makes friends with Tova Sullivan, the night cleaner at the aquarium. Tova lost her husband and son, and Marcellus tries to help Tova by providing some helpful information regarding the death of her son.

Other characters are introduced. There background histories are very interesting and some are connected to each other. My favorite characters besides Tova and Marcellus were Cameron and Ethan. Twists and turn happen, and I won’t spoil anything, but I will say it was a very nice ending.

I saw this book is being turned into a movie, with Sally Field as Tova. I think great choice, and I can’t wait to see it.
