Week 1 – School not High School Football

Posted on 09/14/202503/12/2026 by Mark Lieberman

The first week of school for Niko is in the books, and no complaints. Normally, and just like me, he doesn’t enjoy Physical Education, but on Thursday he said he played soccer and as the goalie, he blocked a lot of balls, and he also scored a goal!

The drop-offs in the morning has been very easy and quick, and I like that I don’t have to get out and wait with him for 20 minutes. I have not yet ventured to the gym afterwards as I enjoy the cooler weather walks, but I know that when “winter” comes and there is white stuff on the ground and in the air, the gym will be a very nice refuge.

On Friday, he was sick, well, not like the Flu or Covid, but something else. No fever, but tired, runny nose, and cough. He was complaining on Thursday when he arrived home, and I had a feeling that Friday would be a sick day. He woke up twice in the middle of the night for a quick pee, and the second one at 3 am, I told him we are staying home and I won’t be waking you up at 6:15 am. When I tucked him back in bed, he was reaching for his iPad and I was like nope, go to sleep! At 4 am, I thought I heard his iPad rumbling and I woke up to seize it, but it was Nina. She plays an audiobook throughout the night. I told her no school for Niko, and both of us went back to our bedrooms. Yes, we all sleep in separate beds and rooms, as this is pretty common in marriages. It may sound strange to some, but it works for us. Like many couples, we discovered that sleeping apart leads to better sleep! Nina is also the not the best sleeper, and any type of movement or noise may wake her and then it will take a long time for her to go back to sleep. We stared sleeping in separate beds a few years ago when we were both sick as we didn’t want to bother each other, and afterwards, we just kept it going.

At 6:15 am, I did indeed hear his iPad, and I woke up and opened his door and told him, I am awake and in my bedroom if you need me. I made sure to close Nina’s door so she could get a little bit of extra sleep.

When it comes to medication, it’s always a challenge to get him to take a dose. But, he took a dose on Thursday night and on Friday without complaining. I am glad. He is also eating and drinking, so I know whatever is ailing him, it’s not serious. I am glad.

I won’t complain, well, maybe a little bit.

Nina and I were planning on going to Costco on Friday as every time we have gone as a family, Niko is usually done after a few minutes. That means, Nina has to finish shopping quickly and I have to take Niko to get cheap Costco food (pizza and hot dogs)! I thought that since he was sick, maybe Nina could go on her own, but she decided to get Costco delivered as well as more food from a local grocery store. I can’t even remember the last time I was able to browse the Costco aisles without Niko. Same goes for Trader Joes! Well, maybe Nina and I can try again next month.

I was also tired, and took an hour nap during my lunch break. I have been napping a bit more lately on the weekends, and before I do it, I ask Nina if would be OK. Usually, they are good as Nina is knitting and watching something on her iPad and Niko is watching YouTube Kids and playing video games. I don’t nap all day, just an hour at the max. Niko is a great alarm and when it buzzes on his iPad, he comes running into my room and jumps on me. What a great way to wake up.

On Friday night, we did bedtime at 6:30 pm. He was coughing a lot, and I was a bit worried that his coughing would keep him awake for a long time and also in previous times, his coughing has turned into vomiting. Let me tell you, I don’t do well in vomit as I am a vomit follower! Well, he did eventually fall asleep and it took about an hour. How do I know? I was laying in his bed waiting for him to fall asleep. He likes having us in his room, and it’s actually nice and relaxing for us as it’s dark and quiet and Niko is tucked beautifully in his blankets. Nina did it everyday for a long time, but recently, we have been switching off. When we do leave his room, we have to be quiet for the fear of waking him up – which does happen sometimes, but he goes right back to sleep. He did wake up at 1 am for a quick pee, and we got more medication in him. He did cough for a few minutes, but again, once he fell asleep, he was cough free till 6:15 am when he woke up for good. I heard him, as I have dad senses and was partially alert! I told him to make sure the cat is out of Nina’s bedroom and to close her door.

On Saturday, we relaxed at home, and just made sure Niko was drinking, eating, and continued to take his medication.

This morning, he is doing better, although, we will do more relaxing. He will be monitored by us throughout the day, so we can see where we stand for tomorrow.

As I conclude this, he is leaning on me and watching Simon’s Cat on YouTube Kids. When he doesn’t feel well, he leans on us.
