I was really intrigued about this book, as I only knew of Christina Applegate from Married…With Children and the brilliant Anchorman movies. After I read it, I wanted to reach into the book and give her a hug and say thanks for being you and never giving up on life. Throughout the book were actual excerpts from her diaries and you can see just how sad and happy she was at times.
She was physically, emotionally, and sexually abused. She had eating disorders and body issues. She had a bad boyfriend who was very controlling and almost killed her a few times.
She escaped her tough upbringing by starting her acting career at a very young age.
She talked about her breast cancer and MS diagnosis later in her life. Her MS diagnosis makes it very difficult for her to be a normal person as she is constantly in pain, and because of that, she had to stop being an actor. Another upcoming memoir from another actress that I want to read is Jamie-Lynn Sigler and she also has MS. Applegate and Sigler host a podcast together called MeSsy about MS.
I had no clue of her dancing background. She was one the original members of The Pussycat Dolls, before they became musicians. They started as a dance group that performed the Viper Club owned by Johnny Depp.
I had no clue that her mother and Stephen Stills (yes, that Stills from CSNY) were friendly. Christina refers him as “Uncle Dadu.”
She went to high school with Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, and Milla Jovovich. She also had a lot of interesting stories of being a celebrity.
Overall, I enjoyed it, and am glad I read it. I have a whole new perception of her, and may want to watch her Dead to Me television show.
