The new Alex Cross book by James Patterson is out, and if you’re anything like me, I couldn’t wait to dive in. Alex Cross has been one of the most reliable characters in crime fiction. Psychologist. Detective. Family man. Always exhausted. Always brilliant. Always walking straight into chaos.
The books are fast. Chapters are short. Stakes are high. You tell yourself, “Just one more chapter,” and suddenly it’s midnight.
For this one, James Sampson (his partner and best friend), Bree Stone (his wife and private investigator), and Cross himself are on a mission to a find a missing person (I won’t say who it is, as this is a new release). Well, bad things happen and Sampson is called to investigate a series of deadly bomb explosions, while Bree and Alex tackle the missing person. Eventually, Bree has to leave Alex to help with the bombing investigation. So, Alex is on his own.
The chapters alternate for what is happening with Sampson and Cross. Sometimes, I had to go back a few chapters just to remind me what was happening. But, like all of the books, you know, everything is going to work out fine in the end (how they get there is why I read the books). The over arching plot was OK, and there were some surprises that did shock me (even one death).
As for Alex Cross, I will always keep my eyes out for future books. I do have Alex Cross to thank for my passion for crime books. I have read all the Women’s Murder Club and Michael Bennett books by Patterson and company.
I do wish we could get some stand-a-lone Nana Mama, James Sampson, or Bree Stone books.
