A Hard Ticket Home (Mac McKenzie, #1) – by David Housewright

I like fiction crime police thrillers. I have recently finished reading all of the Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers books by John Sandford (they take place in Minnesota) and all the Elvis Cole ad Joe Pike books by Rober Crais (they take place in Los Angeles). So, I am looking for a new series, and I had a few that I thought I would like, but I just couldn’t get into them. I can usually tell after the first few chapters if I am going to be sucked in. My wife, who is also an avid reader (although, her preferred genre is science fiction) recommended this series to me and also told me, he is a local Minnesota author and the series takes place in Minnesota. Being a recent newbie to Minnesota (we moved from Texas last June), I was definitely interested. With Lucas and Virgil, it was neat to know where some of the places were and I smiled when they were mentioned throughout the books.

Mac McKenzie is a former police officer who resigned after 11 years on the job after collecting a large amount of money on a bounty. Now, he is an ordinary ciitizen who just wants to help people. His best friend is Bobby Dunston, a current police officer. Mac is hired to locate a missing person, and with his police skills and investigative skills, a lot of action and surprises happen. I really liked reading his inner thoughts. He is also very funny (kind of like Elvis Cole and Spenser from the Robert Parker books), he is confident, and he just has an easy calm manner.

Overall, I enjoyed the book, and am already on the second one.
