The Last Detective (Elvis Cole, #9) – by Robert Crais

Posted on 12/26/202512/26/2025 by Mark

I stopped reading this a few chapters in as I wanted to read Demolition Angel first as that is about Carol Starkey. In this book, she is helping Cole with a kidnapping as she works at the juvenile desk (prior, she was a bomb squad technician – hence, the title of Demolition Angel).

In the prior Elvis Cole book, L.A. Requiem, we got insight to Joe Pike, and in this one, we get insight to Cole as a kid, his mother, and his days as a Ranger and a mission where his fellow Rangers were killed.

This book stems around the kidnapping of Ben, who is Lucy’s son. Lucy is Cole’s girlfriend. The kidnappers want to blame Cole for something that happened when he was a Ranger, but in a twist, and kind of expected, it was something else.

I enjoyed the action, and easily had a picture of the final standoff amongst the good and the bad people.
