Robert B. Parker’s Showdown (Spenser #53) – by Mike Lupica

Posted on 12/06/202512/06/2025 by Mark

I have had this one in my want to read list since June 30th. The wait was definitely worth it, as I inhaled it and didn’t want to put it down once I started it. I was glad to see Hawk, Tony Marcus, Belson, Quirk, and even Jesse Stone back as well, and of course, the mighty awesome Spenser and Dr. Susan Silverman. I have always loved Spenser’s humor, love of cooking, confidence, and his extraordinary investigating skills.

Well, this one didn’t disappoint me at all. The action was there, and so was Spenser’s fists! I wish Hawk had more of a presence with Spenser as they make a heck of a team. The ending did surprise me as I was trying to solve the case throughout the book, and am not a private investigator with cop like instincts, so I was struggling to put everything together.

When I read the Spenser books, and because I have seen Robert Urich play him, I always picture him and can easily see him doing what is being described in the book.

A new character was introduced as Spenser’s “intern” in this one, and I am hoping that role gets expanded in future Spenser books.
