I first saw Ed on TV doing sports for KABB Fox 29 San Antonio, alongside Ernie Zuniga and Chuck Miketinac. I never even thought that I would end up working with all three of them as a high school football statistician. Ed was with the Texas Sports Radio Network, and Ernie and Chuck were with Thursday Night Lights. Ed even hooked me up do stats for the Spanish radio crew for UTSA Football for one season.
I worked a lot of games with Ed and after he left, I was always happy to see him on the sidelines at Steele and Clemens football games doing his Public Relations thing for the school district.
Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Miami, Florida and graduated from the University of Florida. Go Gators!!!!!!!
What brought you to San Antonio?
My first two jobs in television were in Corpus Christi and the Rio Grande Valley. When Fox 29 started up, I sent them my reel, and it was good enough to get a job there. I worked at Fox 29 for almost six years and then they laid people off, including me in January of 2000. I then went to work at KMOL (now WOAI) as a freelance news reporter until May of 2001.
I feel fortunate to have covered the Cowboys on the mid 1990s, including their victory in Super Bowl XXX in Arizona. It’s difficult to describe the thrill of that experience.
I also covered the Spurs first NBA title in 1999, and witnessed the MLB All-Star Game in Arlington.
I’m a huge fight fan, and I covered some good boxing matches, particularly in Corpus.
I was also privileged to do some special sports human interest stories in my career.
How did you get started doing radio?
I did radio at Florida, including play-by-play of the women’s basketball team. My experiences also included covering huge events at UF, mostly with Gators football, basketball and baseball. One day in 2002, I received a phone call from Gabe Farias, on behalf of Bobby Stautzenberger, and away we went! One of my big thrills was calling Alamo Heights football for about ten seasons, including their state title in 2006.
I parlayed that into some work at UTSA, including being part of the football broadcasts, until work responsibilities forced me to give it up.
Why did you transition to school Public Relations?
I transitioned into school Public Relations in June of 2001. I left South San Antonio ISD because the constant churn of superintendents and board shenanigans sucked the life out of me. I truly enjoyed working there but it was too much. I got to SCUC in March of 2015 and have been there ever since. Even though I qualify for retirement, I hope to work at least two more years, since my youngest is going to be a sophomore at UT.
What does a school Public Relations person do?
A Public Relations person wears many hats, including public information requests, media liaisons, writing, social media, event planning and much more. The job and its pressures and responsibilities have changed greatly since I started 23 years ago.
I’ve watched some special moments at Clemens and Steele, but keep waiting for that elusive state title. The Knights have a shot this season.
What does Ed do for fun?
I like traveling when possible, reading fiction, walking, movies, chess, and trying to stay physically active, which gets harder every year.
