Darling Girls – by Sally Hepworth

Posted on 04/17/2024 by Mark

This was my 3rd book in three months from the Book of the Month Club. I will tell you, that my choices are limited as I am predestined for thrillers and memoirs; everything else I can ignore. My only complaint is it seems the club is aimed toward books about females. Where are the manly books?  Despite that, I am enjoying it.  I really do look forward to the first of the month where I can choose a book and then every day after, check the tracking updates to see where it is.

So, this book is about three foster girls, Jessica, Norah, and Alicia who are all raised by the same foster mother, Holly Fairchild, and that foster mom is cruel and punishes them.   The girls form a bond and refer to themselves as “sisters.”   As adults, Jessica is married and has her own business, but she has an addiction to meds, Alicia is a social worker, and Norah with an H is the wild and crazy sister who has three dogs named Converse, Couch, and Thong (each named for something they trashed).  Of the three, Norah is the one with anger issues.

Many years later, a detective calls them to tell the girls that bones have been found underneath the house they were raised in.  They come back to be questioned by the police.

The story provides a background of the girls before, during, and after foster care.  Scattered throughout is also a story of somebody (I won’t spoil it) talking to a therapist.

When I found out who the bones belonged to and who did it, I was surprised.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and it was a quick read for me as well.
