In January, and while I was scrolling through Facebook, I saw an advertisement for Brick Fest Live in San Antonio, TX scheduled for this weekend. Without even thinking or asking the family, I submitted my contact information so I could be alerted when tickets went on sale. Later, when I did tell Nina and Niko, they were excited, but couldn’t really think that far ahead.
On the first Saturday of February, and while Niko and I were out driving to do something, I got the notification that tickets were being sold now. So, I pulled the car over to a parking lot and purchased three tickets. It wasn’t cheap!
Now flash forward to yesterday, and we were excited to finally experience Brick Fest Live. A few days prior, I scoped out parking as I wanted to not only see where to park, but also how much. I also thought of a great sandwich place for lunch and when I inputted it for directions, it was less than 5 miles from the Freeman Coliseum, the site of Brick Fest Live. I even told Niko about this restaurant called W.D. Deli and he thinks Subway is the bomb. Well, my sweet Niko, just wait till we eat lunch at this place.
The Brick Fest Live was not as impressive as the description and the hype. At first Niko wasn’t into it, but then I found a table with legos and he started building. They had quite a few tables for this, and I think he enjoyed that part the best. He didn’t want to play with the glow in the dark legos, the graffiti lego wall, or build a car and race it down a ramp. Nor, did he care for the prebuilt legos from some people as well as actual lego sets. We did buy him a lego pencil case and a lego ruler. It was fun, but not worth the $80 plus I spent for tickets!
Afterwards, we went to the W.D. Deli and Niko said it was different than Subway, but then later on, he said it was really good.
He had this: THE ITALIAN – Ham, Pepperoni, Salami, Provolone, and Tomato with a Basil Aioli, Grilled on Sourdough Bread. But no Basil Aioli!
I had this: WAYNE’S EXCELLENT HOAGIE – Ham, Salami, Provolone, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Crushed Red Pepper, Italian Dressing, Mayo on a Hoagie. But no Crushed Red Pepper and Italian Dressing!
Nina had this: TURKEY AVOCADO WRAP – Turkey, Avocado, Swiss Cheese, Tomato, Lettuce, Mayo, Wrapped in Spinach Flour Tortilla.
Next door to the deli was a Half Price Books that is actually closing in a few weeks. I always tend to find the sports and the performing arts section to see if anything catches my eye. In the performing arts sections, I found an autobiography by Eddie Floyd. I showed it to Niko, and he immediately grabbed it from me and told Nina he wanted it. Why you ask? Well, one of his favorite songs is called Big Bird by Eddie Floyd. So, we got it for him. It’s even one that I may read soon. In the area behind the book store, there were a few cats and Niko wanted to pet them. We just said to be very careful because we don’t know them.
After books, Niko was insistent on visiting the animal defense league so he can see and pet more cats and kittens. Yeah, not my favorite thing in the world, but I reluctantly obliged. It was super close to the deli and books. I knew they would both want to adopt every cat and kitten, and they petted them all while I sat and watched. We escaped with new scents and no new animals, and Riley cat was very intrigued by us when we arrived home.
