Last Monday, and right as I logged into my work at 8 am and was looking at my outlook calendar for the day, our Wi-Fi went out. When I started to troubleshoot it, it was nothing on my end. It was on AT&T’s end, and they were already aware and trying to fix it; not just for us, but several of our neighbors as well. Nina and I both let our bosses know about it, and we really didn’t know when it would be back up as the troubleshooting app I used kept changing the time from 2 pm to 3 pm to 24 hours and somebody from our neighborhood Facebook group called and they told them 2 pm the following day.
Nina and I grew up in a time before the internet, so we were happy reading a book (me) and knitting and reading a book (Nina). Niko was struggling as he is so used to having it. So, what did we do to pass the time?
We watched four movies on our DVD player, and Niko actually paid attention and was interested in all of them.
We started with Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, then we moved to Happy Feet, and then we did Despicable Me, Despicable Me 2, and The Minions. I didn’t get much reading done, as I was also interested in the movies.
I did allow Niko to use my hotspot for the evening so he could have some YouTube Kids before he went to sleep.
I don’t want to hear it, so don’t ask. I don’t think the hotspot would’ve been efficient for Nina and me as we run a lot of stuff for our work. Yes, I have used it in the past but only for a few minutes; not all day.
Since we weren’t sure when it would be online, we had told Niko that night that if we don’t have it by Tuesday morning, we will pack up our stuff and work remotely from my parents house.
Well, when we woke up at 6:30 am, we still had no Wi-Fi, so, we had to quickly get everybody packed.
Me
I used a small tote bag for my laptop and all of its accessories. I even threw my kindle in so I could read on my downtime.
Nina
She packed a small backpack with her laptop and some knitting.
Niko
He wanted a suitcase! Yeah, I am serious! We grabbed his iPad, Switch (and all of his games), UNO cards, a memory game, and some Legos.
I won’t bore you with details, but I will say it felt like we were going to the office as it took almost 45 minutes in the morning and about an hour coming home with lots of traffic everywhere.
Good news, as our internet was online by the time we got home on Tuesday, so we were good for the rest of the week.
Let me rephrase that last sentence. Wednesday was good, and Thursday was good right up until 1:30 PM when it disconnected again. At that time, I was supposed to be leading a team meeting where I tell them what we do in Unclaimed Property (they call it a Lunch and Learn). I quickly got connected through my hotspot and was only a minute late! The AT&T app again said internet offline and should be fixed in 24 hours. I did stay on my hotspot till I was able to logout from work.
Yeah, we were frustrated with this and usually, when we have issues, it is resolved fairly quickly. Not this time, though.
For Friday, we again packed up our stuff and worked from my parents house.
When we got home on Friday afternoon, we still had no internet, so Nina called Spectrum and switched our internet and mobile provider to them. They could’ve come that evening to install, but it was right around the same time Niko was going to sleep, so they came yesterday afternoon to install. Since we are new customers, we got a really good deal. It was funny, because when they were here, Niko was following the technician inside and outside house watching him work. He even gave him money from his own safe. When we all eventually logged in the new Spectrum Wi-Fi, a loud silent yay moment came from each of us. I think the person who was most excited, was Niko as he was the first to login and not even a second later, YouTube Kids was already playing!
I know Niko enjoyed being at my parents house as he loves their attention and company.
