On June 10th, I finished reading this book: Spinning the Globe: The Rise, Fall, and Return to Greatness of the Harlem Globetrotters by Ben Green. And a few weeks ago, I finished these two books: The Secret Game: A Wartime Story of Courage, Change, and Basketball’s Lost Triumph by Scott Elsworth and The Rivalry: Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, and the Golden Age of Basketball by John Taylor.
I enjoyed them all and did lots of searches on Wikipedia to get more information on the people involved. But, for all three, segregation had to be dealt with and reading the stories of those involved, it frustrated me. The Globetrotters were formed in the last 1920’s by Abe Saperstein, who is Jewish, and the team was made up of Blacks. I am, though, very glad that a lot of people; especially athletes, stood up for themselves and others and made a statement to stop the insanity.
Totally not related, but I just finished my third James Patterson book; the first was James Patterson (the autobiography), the second was Along Came a Spider, and the third was Kiss the Girls. I might have a problem as I really like the Alex Cross character and just started Jack and Jill, the third book of a lot in the Alex Cross series. I have never been a fan of crime novels, but James Patterson’s style of writing and suspense is keeping me interested. I watched the movie Along Came a Spider last night, but the book was much better. I will start Kiss the Girls tonight. Oh, Morgan Freeman as Alex Cross – awesome!
