Thanksgiving Weekend

Posted on 11/24/202104/19/2025 by Mark

Last week, I worked at my physical office Monday through Wednesday. I was off Thanksgiving and Friday. I don’t mind getting up earlier than expected, but driving to work at 6 am when it’s pitch black and then driving home in traffic takes a toll on me. I was absolutely exhausted when I came from home work those three days and it was hard to flip the switch from working and tired dad to just plain old dad. Everything Niko and I did when I got home felt rushed as I arrived home around 4:45 pm and his bedtime is 7 pm. He has been waking up super early for the past several weeks and that is why we have early bed. If he wakes up later, we adjust.

I still do have a Niko alarm set in the middle of the night; usually around 1 0r 2 am, for a quick Niko pee. On Daylight Savings a few weeks ago, I had no clue of what time my Niko alarm should be and wise Nina suggested not to set one and see what happens. Well, I did that and he did sleep with no accidents until 5:30 am. Unfortunately, he was unable to go back to sleep and that means, I have to be awake also! Yeah, not fun for me. I did try the no Niko alarm a few more times and it didn’t work. So, I guess we will try again later.

One thing I did love is when I came home, he was super excited to see me and that is the best feeling in the world. On Wednesday, I got a free apple pie from work and before I could even set it on the kitchen island, he was already waiting with a fork and plate.

I was glad to enjoy a nice long weekend. I didn’t even want to take Niko anywhere, mainly because I know most places would be super packed. I played a lot of tiles, legos, hide and seek, and video games with Niko. When he was occupied by himself doing things, I was able to read some e-books; I finished Kal Penn’s autobiography and am now reading a book about Cokie Roberts written by her husband, Steven Roberts.

I got the backyard mowed on Friday morning while Niko sat at my desk with the window open so I could talk to him and see him. It was a tad too chilly for him to sit on the back porch. But, perfect for a mow! Later in the day, we did go outside in the backyard to kick some balls and then we took a short walk around the block. The walk was his idea.

I also did a major mask wash as I brought several with me while I was at work as they do require masks to be worn in common areas. I didn’t have to wear one at my desk, unless I was near somebody while I was walking around doing things. I do want to say my company is doing a really good job of being safe as there are signs of social distancing and sanitation stations everywhere. In my department, there are about 10 people on site and we are occupying every other desk so we can be safe. I am scheduled for Christmas week on site and then who knows what will happen on January 3rd.
