Nina’s Birthday and Labor Day

Posted on 09/05/202104/19/2025 by Mark

It feels like every year since Nina and I have been together, I always take her birthday (last Thursday) off which is also right around Labor Day (tomorrow). I enjoy my time off, but I don’t have the luxury to be able to do nothing and sleep all day; which would be great for me!

I have been off since last Wednesday and don’t return to work till Tuesday. One of the best perks about me being at Chase for 14 years (I will hit 15 years in January) is I have 4 weeks of vacation. I still have about 8 days left for usage this year. I am planning on using some of that in October as we celebrate our 11th wedding anniversary on October 10th. Our 10th anniversary cruise was canceled last year because of the pandemic.

When I am off, I am dad all day and that is best feeling in the world. I can’t sleep in because when Niko wakes up, I have to get up also. During my days off, he has been getting up earlier than normal. I always let Nina sleep in since she isn’t the best sleeper and giving her some extra time does help her. Yesterday, I was exhausted in the early afternoon and while Niko was in the bathroom, I was waiting for him to be finished in his bedroom. I was falling asleep so, I asked Nina if I could get an hour to take a nap and she said go for it. Before she was finished saying it, I was already covered up and sleeping in our bedroom. When I awoke, I was refreshed and I was thankful to to her.

On Friday morning and on a whim, Niko and I went to our neighborhood pool and it was a blast. Niko and I eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner together, we play, we relax, we laugh, I answer 10 billion questions (I only know the answer to 10 of them, so I make something silly up for the rest of them), and at the end of day, I get him cleaned. Then for nighttime in his bed, I either tell him made up silly stories about a particular lego piece he built or he covers me up with all of his blankets and pillows.

When I am off, Nina puts in a little more time for her work; although she was off on her birthday, today, and tomorrow.
