If you asked me what my favorite music genre is, I would quickly answer oldies; 50’s and 60’s! The funny thing about that is the fact that the majority of those artists are my parents age. I wasn’t even born! I was born in 1977 so, I should like late 80’s and 90’s! But, I don’t.
My favorite band is The Beatles. My first CD’s were Frat Rock and Toga Rock II which were full of lots of really awesome oldies music and I purchased them when I was 13 years old along with a box set of all The Beatles albums. If my favorite band wasn’t The Beatles, it would be one of the Motown groups or The Rolling Stones.
I saw Paul McCartney live from the upper deck in 1993 as he was the first concert in The Alamodome. In 2013, I saw him again live, but this time from a much better vantage point in Austin and I had Nina with me. Nina didn’t think she would enjoy it, but she did! She was surprised by the pyrotechnics during Live and Let Die.
Other live concerts I have attended were: Billy Joel/Elton John, Pink Martini, Steve Earle, Toad the Wet Sprocket, The Temptations/The Four Tops, Chuck Berry, and Leon Russell (twice).
I worked in a box office for a theatre and also worked inside that theatre to help promote the touring Broadway shows. I enjoyed two weeks of The Producers and often came home work singing all the songs. I have seen several other Broadway shows both in NY and the touring shows locally. Nina and I are looking forward to taking Niko to NY to see the sites and shows later on down the road.
Now, I will tell you I like oldies as I reflect…
When I was much much much younger and my parents would be driving somewhere (obviously with me in the car with them), they always had the oldies station (KONO 101.1 San Antonio) playing and that is how I became to love that genre. I may not know the words to the songs, but I am excellent at naming the artist and song title.
A few weeks ago, I purchased a subscription to SiriusXM and have really enjoyed listening to music; mostly oldies, playing in the background while I work. I don’t think it bothers my co-workers; Nina and Niko, because I have it playing low. And, I don’t think they mind when I start humming with the music or start doing an impromptu sitting in my chair dance.
If you look at my playlists on my iPhone, you will see that I have a wide variety of musical tastes. Not just oldies!
The shows I listen to on SiriusXM are: Gettin’ Together with Tommy James, Celtic Crush with Larry Kirwan, Meg Griffin’s Disorder, Drew Carey’s Friday Night Freak-out, and David Johansen’s Mansion of Fun. Besides the oldies stations on SiriusXM, I also frequent Little Steven’s Underground Garage.
Several years ago and before Niko was born, Nina and I visited her dad who lives in Loveland, OH which is very close to Cincinnati. I really wanted to visit the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, even though it was almost 4 hours away. But, we did it and I was in heaven for those few hours while I was looking at everything.
