Snow

Posted on 02/21/202104/19/2025 by Mark

Last Monday it snowed. Last Thursday it snowed. That is not a typo! Snow is very very very very rare for where I live in Texas. We also had rolling power outages throughout the week with the longest lasting about 36 hours. Even during the nighttime when it was the coldest, we had no power; well, except for Wednesday when it turned on at midnight and Thursday, we had power all day. No worries, we just bundled up and wore layers and made sure Niko was warm in his bedroom. Thank goodness we have a gas stove as we were able to use it for food throughout the powerless days.

I didn’t have to work on Monday since it was a bank holiday and on Tuesday and Wednesday, since we had no power and no internet, I couldn’t work. On Thursday, I had to work, because our power and internet was working. And, on Friday, I had a vacation day planned so I was off on that day.

We did throw almost everything away in our fridge and freezers and on Friday, we got a small Instacart delivery from Costco; just enough so we can survive until we can get our groceries delivered again.

Now, for the fun part of the snow. Niko loved playing in it, rolling in it, falling in it, and using a shovel to dig it up. He was dressed in many many many layers and wore some of our warm clothes.

For me, a person who has lived in Texas for my whole life (I wasn’t born here, I was born in New Jersey, but we moved to Texas when I was 4 months old), I am not used to the cold and I, just like Niko, also dressed in many many many layers of clothes and wore one of Nina’s warm hats! I didn’t play in it as much as Niko, but I did enjoy seeing it on the ground Monday through Wednesday. By the time it was almost all melted, we got another round of snow showers on Thursday. But, by Friday afternoon, it was melted. Next week, the weather will be warmer.
