Last Saturday around 5 pm, I noticed our air conditioning temperature in the house was getting warmer; so, not good when the temperature is probably going to be 100 degrees in the days ahead. And, throw in the fact that it was also a holiday weekend!
We turned the system off and turned it back on before we went to sleep. I could definitely feel it getting cooler throughout the night, but I still wanted somebody to look at it and service it if needed. Well, the company we used couldn’t come until late Sunday afternoon.
On Sunday, we were already planning on visiting my parents for Memorial Day and instead of going up after or during Niko’s nap, we went up that morning. Our car was packed to the maximum with clothes for all of us, toys for Niko, Niko’s baby jail (so he could take a nap), his little potty, and his potty seat for the big toilet.
I have to say for a house that isn’t baby proofed and is home to a large retired guide dog, Niko did excellent and didn’t get in any trouble. He really enjoyed opening and closing a pocket door that separates the kitchen from the formal dining room.
Nina and I put the baby jail in my old bedroom and made it dark as possible for his nap. He got some very nice momma cuddles with breastmilk and he was in the baby jail a few minutes before 1pm.
Nina thinks it’s weird that when we visit my parents, we always seem to drive-by my middle and elementary school! I think it’s weird showing Niko my bedroom. But, I don’t think he cares or knows; at least not now. Maybe in a few years, he will understand it better!
Now, I can finally tell you about our date:
While Niko napped, we ran out to the movies and saw Deadpool 2. Yeah, I know not fancy, but it was dark, comfortable, I was with my wife, I didn’t have to worry about Niko, I had buttered popcorn, I had a big drink, and I got to see a really great movie. The movie theater was less than a 10 minute drive; I am looking forward to selling our house and moving closer to things to do.
When we arrived hime around 3:45pm, Niko was still sleeping. Maybe he was exhausted from running around my parents house or maybe he didn’t sleep well the night before because of the air conditioning; I will never know. Nina and I opened my bedroom door and he was still sleeping, but as soon as he heard our voices, his little head popped up!
On Monday, we baby proofed the kitchen and moved the baby fence to the kitchen nook. Niko can now run around, drive his truck, or push his shopping cart in circles around the kitchen. And, we even left one cupboard open for him and several weeks ago, we purchased a mini baking set and we gave that to him on Monday. He enjoys being in there with us and the extra room as well. Plus, it really makes the 1st floor look much larger than it is because the baby fence has been moved. The only thing I don’t like is his highchair, Nina’s work chair; which is my bungee cord chair from The Container Store, and a 3rd chair are all in that area where the baby can’t get to. So, basically, when I feed him, I have to take his chair and a chair for me and move them both over the fence. I can’t keep them in there because Niko is so strong that he can move them and I also don’t want a chair falling on him. We do have a heavy leather chair that he moves around but he can’t push it over yet! For the past few days, when I come home from work, he usually has a plethora of food and drink on the TV stand so we really don’t eat together anymore; I miss that. We do, however, share a bowl of cereal and Niko can’t wait for that; I tell him only once a day so we can’t do that in the morning. Another big challenge is every time we open the refrigerator, little baby comes running and sticks his little hands in the drawers that are at his level; yes, we have a baby lock and so far, it works. The bigger challenge is the oven and stovetop as hot things are hot and we don’t want him to accidentally burn himself. We have started using the burners in the back instead of the front and we just installed a lock on the oven yesterday and again, so far, the lock has worked. I just had to pick him up when Nina opened it to cook and whenever he was in that area, I had to watch him and reiterate that it’s very hot so don’t touch the door. It’s so cute seeing him hover around Nina when she is doing kitchen things; he even got to mix his first cookie dough batter; of course, with Nina’s help.
On Monday night, he woke up because he was hungry; I couldn’t even tell you if it was 10pm or 2am. Normally, he sleeps thru the night. Nina got him out of the crib and I went downstairs to get food and drink for him. He is very talkative and he kept saying too bright; even when I was feeding him. So, I turned the lights of and used my phone flashlight to see. Eventually, a few minutes later, he was back to sleep and so was I. I didn’t know it but throughout the night he was whimpering on and off; Nina heard him. When they woke up in the morning, his right eye was swollen and and he was still saying too bright. To make a long story short, Nina took him to the doctor that afternoon and he had an eye infection that required eyedrops. Just getting the drops in his eye took both of us and yes, he screamed and cried; but then 3 seconds later, he was OK. Its been a week and his eye is much better; we stopped the drops on Friday.
