Potty Training

Posted on 03/25/201804/19/2025 by Mark

Well, it’s been 15 days since we started potty training and Niko is doing great; pees have been very successful and only a few times has he had an accident; he gets so excited afterward that he picks up the potty to hand to us.  A few days ago, he did that and the potty fell and of course, pee fell out; poor Niko slipped and fell in it.  We purchased a potty cover for the big toilet and he enjoys sitting in it and peeing; I really think he does it because he gets to flush!  I like it because it’s fun seeing him sitting on the big potty.

So, we have gotten a few poos in the potty, but he is still trying to figure that out.  We did bribe him with ice cream, cookies, or cake when he poos in the potty.  One night after we ate dinner, I put Niko down in his play area and I stayed in the kitchen to clean; Nina was working in the kitchen nook.  Very quietly, Niko sat down on the potty all by himself and peed; by the time I got over to sit next to him in case he needed help, he had his poo face on and it was game-time!  He did a poo and Nina and I gave him cake!  Man, I was proud.

We have had shorts on him, but he hasn’t yet mastered how to take them off when he needs to pee; he’s had a few accidents.  I guess this is a work in progress.

Yesterday was the 1st time we have ventured out since potty training and to be honest, we didn’t know what to expect.  We took the potty and toilet seat cover with us, lots of spare clothes, and pee pads for the car seat.  A few minutes before we left, he again, quietly sat on the potty and did a huge stinky poo; yes, he got ice cream!  A little bit even got on the rug; thank goodness that rug isn’t coming with us when we move.  I got the job of wiping him up and cleaning the potty and Nina got the job of feeding him.  OK, I gagged a lot when I put the poo in the big toilet and even more when I was cleaning it.   I had to get some guidance from Nina for the proper way to clean and sanitize it; I had no clue.  When we arrived at the restaurant for my parents 49th Anniversary celebration, he was distracted by people and of course, the grandparents, my brother, and my mom’s sister.  I tried a few times to get him to pee in bathroom and it failed.  Would it have been easier if I had the toilet seat with me?  I don’t know.  He had two accidents, but it actually wasn’t much spillage; I got some on my polo shirt and I really didn’t care.  When we left, Nina and I tried again in the family bathroom and again, he wanted no part of it.  So, I took his shorts off and went to the car to see if he would sit on his potty.  And, guess what?  He did it!  Yay!  So, he can pee in the back of the car; that is good to know.  Next time, we will definitely bring the toiler seat cover in with us.  Oh, we also kept him in shorts afterwards while we were home and I am teaching how to pull them off to pee and poo; he did it a few times for us.

Naps and night-time potty training is still a few weeks away.
