I was off for a month when Niko was born and really enjoyed spending every minute of the day with him and my wife. Now, that I am back to work (for a month and yes, it went fast), I hate leaving them at 6:30am during the weekdays, but I love it when I come home and I get to hold Niko and change his diaper (it doesn’t even matter if I am still in my nice work clothes). It is priceless and he always puts a big smile on my face (and Niko knows I am his Daddy and is also very excited to see me). I think he is caught off guard because he spends all day with Mom and in less than 5 seconds, he is transferred to me.
It is going to be hard on all 3 of us when High School football starts on August 25th because I will be out all day on Thursday’s (I won’t be home until 11pm — and I start at 6:30am). I am the statistician for Thursday Night Lights on CW35 in San Antonio and online at www.kmys.tv/tnl. I started as a High School football statistician for the Texas Sports Radio Network in 1997.
I am still undecided on what I will do on Friday’s during the High School football season. In addition to being a TV statistician, I am also a freelance High School sports writer/photographer and have held that title since 2011. I retired from the Texas Sports Radio Network in 2015 so I could focus more on being a sports writer/photographer. By far, that was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Getting married and having a baby will always be at the top of that list. I actually have my Friday plan written down, but I know if I tell my wife, she will be sad and may end up crying (which makes me feel bad). I will tell her later (but, she will have an idea because she reads my Daddy Diaries BLOG’s).
Niko sleeps well (when he eventually does fall asleep). So far, the longest he has gone without waking up is 5 hours. Sometimes he sleeps in his co-sleeper which is in our bed (although, he is almost too tall for it) and sometimes he sleeps right next to me on his back in my armpit. Hey, it is safe and warm and smells like an armpit. Nina has always liked the way I smell and that is in large part to the soap and deodorant I used. Now, I use her homemade soap but still use the same deodorant. It will definitely be my job when the time arrives to teach Niko about hygiene — that will be fun!!!
I really enjoy when he sleeps on me because I don’t get much father-son time during the weekdays so any extra time I get is absolutely precious. He also sleeps better on me then on Nina because I don’t have breasts (well, I do, but mine don’t provide milk). When Nina feeds him, he passes out on her boob (I taught him well).
When Niko does wake up in the middle of the night, I sometimes have to really think about where that noise is coming from because we have a lot of noise in our bedroom (not that type of noise). I have no clue what time it is when this happens and my wife always tells me because she turns on the flashlight on her phone so she can feed the baby and not me.
I love the attention Niko gets when we take him out in the world. People rarely talked to me before, now I can’t get them to stop!!!
Niko just turned 8 weeks old and he is growing out of his newborn clothes. That means, we will have to do a clothes swap fairly soon. He is making fun noises, tries to smile, and I can’t wait for him to laugh. He has already gotten tears when he cries and he cries LOUD. How can such a little dude make that much noise?
