The Almost First SOLO Diaper Change

Posted on 05/15/201604/19/2025 by Mark
One of my many responsibilities as a new Dad and husband is to make sure Nina is comfortable before, during, and after breastfeeding — since this is something I can’t do.  It feels like I am her trainer and she is a boxer.  In between rounds, I squirt water in her mouth and shove food in her mouth.  Afterwards I make sure she pees and poos and takes a walk to stretch her legs.

After the breastfeeding has been completed, it is Mark time with Niko!!!  It is actually very easy for me because he falls into a milk coma and becomes very sleepy.  I swaddle him and without even crying, he falls asleep in the bassinet.

However, in this particular feeding (while we were still in the hospital), Niko was very fussy and I couldn’t understand why as he had just finished eating.  I looked at the diaper and found poo…OH CRAP (no pun intended)!  Nina and I have been changing his diaper together because of his circumcision and his umbilical cord was still dangling — it’s just so much easier with 4 hands.

My first response was panic, but It changed to confidence fairly quickly.  I grabbed all the supplies and went to work.  Yes, he cried loud.  Nina heard his cries from the nearby nurses station and came running slowly and I am glad because I needed her hands to make sure Niko didn’t touch his penis (since it was recently circumcised and very tender to the touch) with his hands or legs.  Earlier, he had touched it and he cried louder than a fan at a Justin Bieber concert.

On Sunday morning at home, I was downstairs with Niko (it was very  very very early) and Nina was upstairs getting some much needed sleep.   Well, I heard a fart and when I looked, it was poo.  So, I changed his diaper all by myself!   No issues.  I even changed another diaper later that morning by myself.

During the overnight hours while most of the world is sleeping, I do my best to be alert enough to change his diaper by myself (if needed) so Nina doesn’t have to.

With each solo diaper change, I gain more confidence and get faster. No gagging yet!!!
