It was a full house and several fans (including myself) had to stand. It was super loud and extremely energetic. There were definitely more St. Anthony fans than Antonian fans. I wonder why? The gym at Antonian is much smaller than Greehey arena on the campus of St. Mary’s University — St. Anthony played Central Catholic on January 21st there and St. Anthony crushed them by 22 points.
I know a lot of people come to the St. Anthony games to see Charles Bassey, the outstanding 6’10 freshmen, but there is another player on the St. Anthony team who can very easily mesmerize you with his excellent ball handling skills, sharp shooting skills, and his very confident in his abilities — I am talking about Isiah Saenz, a junior.
Those 2 players combined for 50 points and the entire Antonian team scored 51 points. So, know you’re probably wondering how many points the rest of the St. Anthony team scored? Well, I will say they won by a larger margin than their last game against Central Catholic!
The final score was St. Anthony 78 and Antonian 51. Isiah Saenz had 26 points and Charles Bassey had 24 points and 20 rebounds and several blocks. According to Maxpreps.com today, Charles Bassey leads the state of Texas in TAPPS in rebounds (17.4) and blocks (6.1) and is number 8 in scoring at 20.4. WOW!!!! Did I mention he is a freshman folks?
I am confident that Charles is in charge and knows exactly how good he is and that his future is set (barring an injury or a sudden change of mind to not basketball). His celebrity status is just going to keep increasing after each game and as I mentioned in my last article about the Yellow Jackets, I really hope he stays at St. Antony because that is the best place for him. He has a lot of role models to look up to and a lot of people at the school are looking out for him.
Jude Pereida, a junior, had 8 points; Ricardo Valadez, another junior, had 7 points; Diego Vasquez, a senior, had 5 points; Asa Meyer, a senior, had 3 points; Nick Sampeck, a sophomore, had 3 points; and Santiago Vasquez, a junior, had 2 points — for St. Anthony.
Logan huff, a senior, led Antonian with 17 points.
Despite the lopsided loss, Antonian is a very good basketball team and they are coached by one of the top coaches in San Antonio, Rudy Bernal.
St. Antony has 3 games remaining in the regular season and I will be at 2 of them:
2/11 — Vs Central Catholic @ University of the Incarnate Word
2/19 — Vs Antonian at St. Anthony
