Week 4 – Burbank VS Highlands AND Judson VS Corpus Christi Carroll

Posted on 09/28/201311/04/2025 by Mark
On Thursday night, I was at the Springs Sports complex for the Burbank Bulldogs and the Highlands Owls.  Burbank trailed 21 to 0 at halftime, but in the 2nd half the Bulldogs scored 43 points and held Highlands scoreless.  Yes, folks, Burbank did the impossible and won the game by a final score of 43 to 21.   The last time Burbank defeated Highlands was in 1978!!!

Two weeks ago, I worked the Steele/Kerrville Tivy game and Steele had a HUGE lead at halftime.  In my blog recap for that game, I wrote, “I always feel bad when a team is down by such a huge margin at halftime.  How and where do they even find the self-motivation to play for 24 more minutes?  I am still waiting, and I know it will happen, for a team to win a game after being basically crushed in the first half.  That would be the game of the century!!!”

Now, I know what you’re thinking…21 points is not a huge margin.  Well, I will tell you that the Highlands Owls made the Burbank Bulldogs look really really bad on offense and I was expecting a Highlands victory and quite possibly a shut-out!!   So, whatever Burbank drank at halftime, I want to bottle and sell it cause they looked like a totally different team.  I was absolutely amazed at there performance and this game will be a candidate for the game of the year!!!

I do want to mention that the majority of players from both teams played both ways one of them in particular stood out and that was Burbank quarterback and defensive back, Jeremy Sanchez.  Jeremy had 29 carries for 122 yards and 1 touchdown and several tackles and sacks.

I would’ve written much more about this game yesterday since I was off from work, but as you can see, that didn’t happen. Hey, I got a really good excuse…I was at Alamo stadium along with KSAT 12 news and the Athletic Director for SAISD, Gil Garza.  KSAT 12 did a story on me and Alamo stadium renovation photos!!  Yep, I was on television!!!

Last night, I was at D W Rutledge stadium for the Judson Rockets and Corpus Christi Carroll Tigers.

It was actually very surreal that at the same I was driving to the game, I was also on television.  So, yeah, I was very happy and I couldn’t have asked for a better setting for my happiness than a Judson Rocket football game!!

The Rockets cruised to a very easy victory by a final score of 54 to 18.

The Corpus Christi Carroll Tigers ran a total of 73 plays for 197 yards.  Sophomore running back, Noah Lisk, was really impressive.  Lisk had 15 carries for 70 yards and all 3 touchdowns.

The Rockets ran a total of 64 plays for 420 yards.  Now, in the 2nd half, the Rockets ran 19 plays for 57 yards (a bunch of bad snaps from the center to the quarterback).  The only score for the Rockets in the 2nd half was an 82 yard punt return by Kevion Ramsey!!!

The Judson quarterback, Rayjohn Austin-Ramsey, was 11 for 13 for 175 yards and 2 touchdowns.  His back-up, Weston Vecasy, was 7 for 9 for 56 yards.

Andre Wilson, the wide receiver, had 4 receptions for 95 yards and 2 touchdowns and 3 carries for 46 yards and 2 touchdowns.  I would love to see Andre run the ball more!!!  He is fast and as I mentioned before, he has a knack for the endzone.

The leading rusher for Judson was Brandon Sanders who had 10 carries for 58 yards and 1 touchdown.

Looking at my Judson stat-board, 10 different running backs and 7 different wide receivers touched the ball!!  Wow…talk about spreading the wealth; well, I guess that is partly due to the fact that this was a blowout game.

The Rockets are off next week and then on October 11th, district play stats as they play the Wagner Thunderbirds in “the hammer bowl.”

Tonight, I will be at Farris stadium as the Brandeis Broncos play the Stevens Falcons.  I am not expecting a similar outcome to last weeks Brandeis game!!
