Inside the Huddle – Virgil Peterson

Posted on 09/03/201211/04/2025 by Mark
Inside the Huddle is a place for my friends to write and share their passion for High School football.

I have worked many games with Virgil Peterson.  He has some great pipes; voice, that is!!!  Not only is he always prepared for the games, but he also brings a lot of experience into the booth.  Thanks for being a guest blogger Virgil.

41-21 Steele over Madison. And thus ended my first game of the 2012 football season. The Steele Knights proved too much for the Madison Mavericks and won the match-up of #1 vs. #2.  Steele looked really strong in the first half taking a 24-0 lead. Madison came roaring back at the start of the 2nd half to cut the lead to 24-14, but behind the running of Justin Stockton the Knights held them off. If you want more details, just check Saturday sport’s section.

Madison and Steele will not meet again this season.  “Why,” you ask?  Madison, with the largest student body population in its district, will play in Division I of the 5A bracket, while Steele, with the smallest student body in its district, will play in Division II of the 5A bracket, and never the “twain” shall meet. Too bad. Because after seeing last night’s game and knowing the talent of both teams, I would love to see them play again after they get all the kinks of the early season worked out.

I can’t believe this is my 7th year as a color analyst for TSRN. It started innocently enough when my friend Mark Kusenberger asked me one Sunday morning after church if I would like to do some broadcasting for high school football.  People have always told me I have a face for radio. In a moment of weakness (not really–I was quite honored and pleased) I said “Yes, that would be fun.”

Working with the TSRN crew is a lot of fun. Most of the time I work with Mark as the play-by-play man.  He is excellent. I can’t believe he can remember all those things he throws into the broadcasts. He even tells us what songs the bands are playing.  On Friday night, Craig Estabrook was our “stat man.” Having someone to keep the stats during the game helps make the broadcast that much better.  The other stat man I get to work with sometimes is Mark Lieberman–the man who runs this blog. Both these men are great at what they do.

I try to come to every game very prepared. I study the teams and make notes from Texas Football Magazine and the Express News. As the season progresses, more data becomes available on what the players and teams have done this year.

My 34 years of keeping statistics for the Highlands football team before I retired from that job in 1999 helped me learn a lot about the inside workings of a team.  My interest in football actually began when I played in the band at Edison High School and went to every Bears game. I continued in the band at Trinity and once again, never missed a game. That’s a lot of football games. I try to bring some personal insight into the games and make sure I mention the hard work done by the bands as they prepare for each game.

I hope you will check the sports section of the paper each week to see what games are on and tune in. Make sure you patronize our sponsors so they know people are listening.  Go to the games if you can; if not, listen to us.

Virgil, I thought you have been with TSRN longer than 7 years!  I am looking forward to working you this season Virgil.

I will be at Farris stadium on Thursday and Lehnoff stadium on Friday night.  On Saturday, I will be at the…..oh my gosh, I really want to tell you now but I am waiting for it to be finalized.  If it works out, it will be awesome and I will write an article about it on Sunday.
