Week 0 – Wagner Vs Reagan

Posted on 09/02/201211/04/2025 by Mark
Last night, I was at Comalander stadium for the Wagner Thunderbirds and the Reagan Rattlers.  Last years game between these two teams produced 68 total points and 923 yards of total offense.  This year, however, was a defensive masterpiece by both teams and was also the best game I worked in Week 0.

In the first half, Wagner ran 13 plays for 51 yards (there first play of them game was a 35 yard pass).   In the second half, they ran 22 plays for 60 yards. So, if you add em up….35 plays for 111 yards!!!  They had several opportunities to win the game but failed to convert all of them.

Reagan, in the first half, ran 43 plays for 189 yards.  In the second half, they ran 22 plays for 87 yards.  We add those numbers…65 plays for 276 yards yards.  The Rattlers had the only score and that came in the fourth quarter.  Reagan had the lead and the ball last with less than 3 minutes remaining.  All they had to do was get first downs.  Curtis Smith, a wide receiver, had a huge 9 yard reception on a third down conversion and he took it upon himself to get the first down!!!  Wow, that was his only catch and it sealed the victory.  Clutch!!!

By looking at these numbers, it was very surprising that the halftime score was tied at 13!!!  Man, both defenses really came to play and that is what I expect out of Wagner and Reagan!

The quarterback for Wagner, Tekoa Bryant-Mckinnies, was 7 for 13 passing for 87 yards.  Robbie Gardner, the running back, had 9 carries for 29 yards and 1 touchdown.

Kyle Keller was the starting quarterback for Reagan.  He was 7 for 18 passing for 62 yards, but it was his back-up, Ty Summers, who had a great game.  Ty had 10 carries for 86 yards and 1 touchdown.  There was a few possessions where both Ty and Kyle were in the game.  Ty looked very comfortable taking snaps.  Marshal Young, the running back, had 13 carries for 62 yards and 2 touchdowns.

I had a comment on my Reagan Rattler post from July 24, 2012 asking about the kicker for Reagan.  Well, how do you replace a Jake Wilcox, who nailed a 58 yard field goal last season?  How about asking a Freshmen to be the kicker!!!  I am serious.  Pablo Herrera is the kicker for Reagan and he is a Freshmen.  And, you know something, he did an OK job.  He didn’t make any mistakes.

I will have a special edition of Inside the Huddle tomorrow from another TSRN broadcaster.

On Wednesday, Inside the Huddle will be written by a parent of a Brandeis football player.

FINAL SCORE

Wagner        13   (0-1, 0-0)

Reagan        20   (1-0, 0-0)
