All Star Football Game

Posted on 05/20/201211/04/2025 by Mark
Last night, I was at Comalander stadium for the 34th Annual All Star Football game.  I love working this game because I get to see the top San Antonio Senior’s from the 2011 season play high school football one last time. Even though I worked 33 games last season, I didn’t see a lot of the smaller/private schools in action and this game had it’s share of athletes from those smaller/private schools.

The three players that I wrote about in my 2012 Signing Day post didn’t participate.   I was a bit disappointed as Tommy, Trevor, and Rex were the faces for several years in high school football.  But there were a lot of other players that I was looking forward to seeing one last time.

I finally got to see Joseph Sadler from Devine.  He broke several state scoring records.

I also got to see the Huguley twins from Churchill.  Both are going to West Point.  Wow!

I know I am not going to be able to mention every player from every team; so I will include a PDF link for both rosters.

Working an All Star game is always challenging for me. I knew who the starters would be, but I really had to play close attention since there would be substitutions for the quarterback, running back, and wide receivers.  I had my roster open the entire game. I even helped Bobby when a different quarterback was in the game.

You know how much I love high school football?  Well, on the opening kick-off, I got goosebumps!!!

The East squad defeated the West squad 16-7.  One would expect a few more points since this was an All Star game, but both teams only had a few days to practice and of all the All Star games I have worked, it is always a real struggle to score.

The West squad’s only score came in the 3rd quarter.  It was a 17 play, 88 yards, and took 6:21 off the clock.  Joey Dominguez, a QB from Somerset, and Joseph Sadler, a RB from Devine, were the two main facilitators on that scoring drive.  Sadler scored the touchdown on a 4 yard run.  Somerset and Devine; how cool is that?  Somerset is coached by Sonny Detmer.  Both of his son’s Koy and Ty played high school football, college football (Ty won the Heisman Trophy in 1990), and professional football.  Wow!  My cousin Matt was Ty’s center in middle school!

Both of the East squad’s touchdown’s were scored by Micheal Akers, a RB from St. Anthony (a private Catholic school).  His 2nd touchdown clinched the victory for the East.  It was a 4th and 1 play with less than 2 minutes remaining in the game and Akers exploded for a 26 yard touchdown run.  I never heard of this kid until last night and I was really impressed.  I really hope he gets the chance to play at the next level.

A total of 17 players touched the ball for the West squad on 57 plays and 174 yards.  They used 5 quarterbacks who combined were 11 for 28 passing for 68 years and 2 interceptions.  Joey Dominguez from Somerset was the most effective quarterback; he was 5 for 9 passing for 35 yards (most came from that scoring drive in 3rd quarter).  William Huguley, a wide receiver from Churchill had 3 receptions for 26 yards.   Joseph Sadler, a running back from Devine, had 7 carries for 30 yards and the lone touchdown.  Darryle Surney, a running back from O’Connor, had 7 carries for 34 yards.

For the East squad, 14 players touched the ball on 51 plays and 174 yards.  They used 3 quarterbacks who combined were 4 for 13 passing for 56 yards and 1 interception.  Cohner Mokry, from Johnson, had 39 of those passing yards.  I still remember a game from Week 2 when Mokry helped his Jaguar team overcome a 14 point deficit with less than 4 minutes remaining in that particular game to win by 1!

Michael Akers, a running back from St Anthony, had 16 carries for 88 yards and both touchdowns for the East.

I must thank The Kids Sports Network.  They did a phenomenal job in organizing and running the game.   They are an absolute pleasure to work with.  Oh, the title sponsor was Pizza Hut and yes, we grabbed two boxes of pizza and noshed on it the entire game.

My next high school football game will be on July 31st at the Alamodome.  It will be the Texas High School Coach’s Association All Star football game.  So, it will be the top Senior’s from the state of Texas.  Will be awesome and another fun challenge for me.

A month after this game, the 2012 season will start!!!!!!!!!  It will be my 16th year with TSRN and 4th year with KMYS!    Can you tell that I am excited?
